With 40 daily races, around 1,000 boats, 8,500 competitors from Olympic/World class professionals to weekend sailors, Cowes week is the largest sailing regatta and one of the longest-running regattas in the world.
After Glorious Goodwood in the social calendar, it is held from the 1st Saturday after the last Tuesday in July, until the following Saturday, unless the tides are unfavourable, as happened in 2004.
As well as the sailing activities, the water and town become a hive of activity from yacht club balls to live music, cocktail parties to busy restaurants and bars overflowing onto the narrow high street. The regatta is famous for its fireworks on the final Friday, launched from barges in the Solent.
The regatta was sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and Toe in the Water was the nominated charity. It uses sailing as part of the rehabilitation for injured servicemen. BOSS watches were the "official watch" and TALISKER®, The Single Malt Scotch Whisky-Made by the Sea, the "official whisky sponsor" this year. |
17 -24 Ebor Festival |
The Ebor Festival is held at York Racecourse during the month of August. It is an occasion of superlatives; the oldest, richest, fastest, and most famous races provide the sporting excellence that combine with fashion and fun over four fabulous days.
Tuesday, the first day of the Festival sees the richest race of the York year, the 600,000 Juddmonte International, a contest ranked in the top ten middle distance contests in the world. The Wednesday of Ebor week is all about the feature race, the totesport Ebor, since it was first run way back in the 1840s. The excitement that this famous handicap generates has been a constant over that time. The buzz about the racecourse on Ebor day is infectious as groups of friends laugh and relax, hopefully in some summer sunshine. Thursday is Ladies' Day and features the Lowther Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks. Friday is Nunthorpe Day and features the Nunthorpe Stakes, the Gimcrack Stakes and the Strensall Stakes. Saturday is Ebor Day and features the Ebor Handicap and the Lonsdale Cup.

The Venice Film Festival (Italian Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica) is the oldest international film festival
in the world.
Founded by Count Giuseppe Volpi in 1932 as the "Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica", the festival has since taken place every year in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy.
Screenings take place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi. It is one of the world's most prestigious film festivals and is part of the Venice Biennale, a major biennial exhibition and festival for contemporary art.
The 68th Venice Film Festival came to an end with the Awards Ceremony on September 10th. Golden Lion for Best Film went to Faust by Aleksander Sokurov. |
