The Royal Caledonian Ball was started in the 1840s as a private gathering given by the Duke and Duchess of Atholl for Scottish friends residing in London.
Since the days of Edward VII the ball has been honoured with the Patronage of the reigning Monarch and it celebrates over 50 years of Patronage by Her Majesty The Queen. One of the highlights of the London Season, it ranks as one of the oldest charity balls in the world.
Over the last 10 years, the Ball has donated 300,000 to Scottish charities including: The Queen Victoria School in Dunblane, Borderline, The Erskine Hospital and St Catherine's Homeless Project in Edinburgh.
The 164th Royal Caledonian Ball will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday the 27th of April 2012. Iona, Duchess of Argyll and the committee look forward to seeing you at the ball.

Glyndebourne 21 May 28 August 2011 |
The Glyndebourne 2011 Festival opened on 21 May with a new production of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nrnberg. Other productions included a new production of Handel's Rinaldo and revivals of Don Giovanni, L'elisir d'amore, Rusalka and The Turn of the Screw.
Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay, Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences.
It is a registered charity, funded by box office income, its members and supporters. The festival presents 6 productions each year in a 1,200-seat opera house built in 1994.
Regarded as part of the London/English summer season performances start in the afternoon, enabling Londoners to leave town after lunch, and finish in time for them to catch the last train back. A long interval allows opera-goers the opportunity for picnics on the lawns or in the restaurants in the grounds.
